Aside from the Great Barrier Reef, Cairns in Queensland provides access to one other natural wonder that inspires awe and excitement into its visitors. The world heritage listed Daintree Rainforest is a destination unlike any other, with one of the world’s most diverse range of fauna and flora it offers a truly incredible opportunity to explore Australia’s outdoors.
One of Daintree’s most accessible attractions can be found in its southern regions, Mossman Gorge is located just 80kms north of Cairns and is a great first stop on your journey through this marvellous rainforest. Nearby the site itself, you will find the Mossman Gorge Centre, where you can start your visit off by learning more about the area and the historical significance of the land to the Kuku Yalanji indigenous people. This centre also has a gallery full of aboriginal crafts and artworks on display.
From the centre you’ll be able to make your way toward the gorge, you can take a stroll through the peaceful canopy of rainforest from the carpark and you’ll soon find yourself transported to the natural paradise that is Mossman Gorge. You’ll be met with a truly magical scene of glistening, crystal-clear water flowing rhythmically over ancient granite boulders that have come to rest in the shallow waters of the gorge. If you’re able to visit during the Summer months of December to February then this will be the perfect time to pull on your swimming costumes and jump into the cool waters of the gorge, providing the absolute perfect place to kick back, relax and enjoy the smooth ambience of your surroundings.
The gorge also has several easy walking trails to offer, all of which allow you to explore the area around you and view some of the many marvels that this rainforest has on display. Taking the River Circuit Trail will reward you with unquestionably stunning views of the sparkling water as you make your way alongside the beautiful river. This walk is only 400m long and can be finished in a matter of minutes, the slightly longer trail known as the Rainforest Circuit covers a total distance of 2km. It’s on this walk that you can really spend some time exploring the natural beauty of this ancient rainforest, and if you keep your eyes peeled you may even spot some of Daintree’s famous wildlife.
