Rex LookoutTucked in between the bustling city of Cairns and Port Douglas near the lush expanse of the Daintree Rainforest lies Rex Lookout. From the spectacular vantage point, you can look out over Trinity Bay below as well as marvel at the picturesque coastline that characterizes this part of the country.

Rex Lookout is a popular stop along the Great Barrier Reef drive because of its stunning views, but also because it is a favourite haunt for hang gliders. Get your camera at the ready as you soak up the turquoise waters, the backdrop of jutting mountains and the rugged coastline.

The History of Rex Lookout

Rex Lookout got its name from Raymond Rex, the Douglas Shire Councilor for 45 years. He was a well-loved man who made great changes in the shire and was respected by his community, particularly when he promised to complete the Captain Cook Highway between Cairns and Port Douglas during The Depression. He also helped to establish a fresh water and power supply from the nearby Rex Creek, which meant he had a major influence on both the area and its transportation developments. Things to do at Rex Lookout

Though most people flock to Rex Lookout for its stunning views, there is plenty to do in the area as well.

Wangetti Beach

This stretch of wild coastline remains undeveloped, giving you an insight into the pure natural beauty of this part of Australia. You can easily access it from the highway that runs along the southern edge of the Rex Range.

Hang Gliding

If you’re looking for an adrenalin-packed adventure with even more amazing views, take to the skies. Rex Lookout is famed for its popularity with hang gliders, and there are daily tandem flights that take off from the Lookout every day. It is the perfect chance for you to experience this incredible sport alongside an experienced pilot. You can also book a lesson or two if it is something you want to do more seriously.

Once the adrenalin of hang gliding has worn off, head to Oak Beach which sits to the right of Rex Lookout. It is not a huge beach on the tourist trail, which means you’ll be able to explore its quiet and peaceful ambiance. There are a cute collection of houses and holiday homes for rent here, too, if you want to soak up the charm of the beach and its surroundings for longer than one day.
