Durian in Daintree Rainfrest

The Fruits of the Daintree

The Daintree Rainforest and Cape Tribulation are home to some very interesting fruits, some of which only grow in the Daintree Rainforest!

There are tropical orchards surrounding the lush rainforest, which grow and harvest these iconic rainforest fruits.

Black Sapote

Black Sapote is sometimes called the Chocolate pudding fruit, and it’s a distinctive tasting fruit. It is a fruit that can be eaten either raw or mixed into food and drinks like milkshakes or cakes. Or, take out the pulp and blend it up with yoghurt and lemon juice! How delicious!

‘Cassowary fruit’

cassowary

The grey milkwood, or Cassowary Plum, is perhaps the most common fruit you’ll see in the Daintree Rainforest. Whatever you call it…this plum fruit is the fallen fruit which is eaten and digested by Cassowaries. They can grow to be quite large and are coated in purple skin. They measure around 10cm by 5cm. Cassowaries eat these fruits, and the fleshy part is dissolved, then when they excrete the seed of the fruit, it germinates into a tree.

If you see a cassowary fruit…don’t eat it! The fruit is poisonous for human consumption, so leave this fruit for the cassowaries only.

Durian

Its origins are in Southeast Asia and mostly grows in Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia.

The fruits can get pretty heavy and can grow up to a whopping 8kg. But despite their spiky appearance, you might smell them before you see them! They are notoriously stinky fruit, although they taste like custard and apples.

Davidson Plums

Davidson plums look like giant blueberries or large grapes! These fruits are incredibly popular in Australia, and are often used in cooking – it’s a popular fruit that is used to make sauces and jams. The fruit has a slightly sour taste to it, but it can be balanced out if it’s mixed with sugar.
