Explore a lush rainforest filled with wildlife in tropical North Queensland.
The Daintree Rainforest is the world’s oldest rainforest and is home to an array of cute animals. Some can be more difficult to spot, but you’ll likely come across one of the many wildlife that live in the rainforest.
What animals live in the Daintree Rainforest
The Daintree Rainforest is home to thousands of animals. The Daintree alone has over 300 mammal species and over 400 bird species. With all kinds of animals living here, these are some of the cutest!
Lumholtz’s tree kangaroo
One of the many tree kangaroos found in the Daintree, the small Lumholtz’s tree kangaroo is found around Atherton Tablelands between Cardwell Range and Mount Carbine.
Keep an eye out for these creatures as they’re usually sleeping in the tree canopy during the day.
Daintree River ringtail possum
The cute little ringtail possums are found around the Daintree River banks. The possum can be found in the treetops, making it difficult for those to spot, so bring along a binocular!
These ringtail possums are light brown and typically weigh less than a kilogram!
Bennett’s tree kangaroo
The Bennett’s tree kangaroo lives in the Daintree’s north around the Daintree River and other wet tropics. This tree kangaroo is mainly brown and grey, with a grey face and black hands and feet.
Musky rat kangaroo
This small brown animal is a mix between a rat and a kangaroo. The creature bounds across the floor like a rabbit and can easily climb the tall trees.
You’ll see them looking for food on the rainforest floor in the late morning to early afternoon.
Green tree frog
The green tree frogs are seen across the Daintree Rainforest and throughout the northern parts of Australia. You’ll easily spot these bright green frogs on the trees, and you’ll likely be able to hear their distinctive croaking.
