Saltwater Crocodiles and Their Habitats

Where Do Crocs Live?

Saltwater crocodiles, or ‘salties’ are the biggest reptiles on Earth. They’ve been dominating Australian waterways for well over 100 million years.

True, it might be a bit intimidating to think that crocs are living in the waters around the most popular tourist spots in Australia. Like all Aussie wildlife, knowledge is safety. So it’s better to know about their habitats and lifestyles, so that we know where to go – and where not to go!

Getting clued up on your croc knowledge will allow you to enjoy the Daintree safely.

So, where do salties live?

Well, the clue is in the name! These giant beasts live in the ocean, in saltwater. But they’re not just limited to the Aussie oceans. They’re pretty adaptable and can survive in rivers, tidal creeks and wetlands. They can also hide out on muddy flats for hours before heading back into the water. So they may not always be in the water!

During the rainy season, these mammoth reptiles may travel further inland as the increased rainwater levels rise.

Do crocs live in the ocean?

There are many crocs that live in the ocean surrounding Australia’s northern shores. Quite often, salties are cruising around the open seawaters. Crocs generally swim between different islands. You’ll see the yellow warning signs dotted around the beaches up north.

What about freshies?

There aren’t really freshwater crocs hanging around the Daintree. These tend to be in regional Queensland creeks, as well as Northern Territory waters.

Croc safety in the Daintree

Over the years, there have been a few croc run-ins in dangerous croc spots. You can never be too careful – which is why it’s best to see these reptiles from the safety of a croc cruise. Never try to look for crocs yourself – this could have dangerous consequences. Crocs are not afraid to eat you for dinner!

Follow these simple rules, and you’ll be able to experience the Daintree without any bother!

  • Don’t swim in the creeks
  • Don’t swim in the sea  (this includes Cape Trib)
  • Only swim in marked swimming holes, like Mason’s
  • Respect the habitat of crocodiles

Join the croc spotting cruise for a better look at these absolute beasts!
